Mysuru: University of Mysore (UoM) is planning to follow the Mysuru Zoo model of introducing battery-operated vehicles in it sprawling campus for the benefit of teachers and students.

In-charge Vice Chancellor Prof. C. Basavaraju has mooted the idea of having the battery-operated vehicles for the teaching and non-teaching staff to move from one department to another.

The development oriented VC has a slew of projects to make the Manasagangothri campus a people-friendly one and as a step in this direction there are plans to introduce the sound, noise and air pollution free vehicles.

Speaking to Star of Mysore here yesterday, Prof. Basavaraju said that heavy vehicles had been banned from entering the Manasagangothri campus. “The students and staff who do not have vehicles of their own will be benefited if the battery-operated vehicles is introduced to move from one place to another without wasting much time. During the Centenary Celebrations of the University of Mysore, all the roads in the campus were relaid. Hence, it is easy to operate such vehicles,” he said and added “In the beginning, two vehicles will be introduced on a pilot basis and if it is found useful then more vehicles will be added.”

According to the VC, no University in the State has this facility. If it is implemented here then it will be first of its kind in the State.

Biometric: The biometric attendance would be introduced in all the hostels coming under the University of Mysore limits. This will help both the staff and the students to maintain timings, said Prof. Basavaraju.

By introducing this safe and secure system, all the unwanted and anti-social elements who were frequenting the hostels for free food would be eliminated. Only genuine students would be provided with all the facilities, he said.

CCTV cameras in all the 18 hostels have been installed with each hostel having four of them. This step has been taken in the interest of the staff and the students. If those who are not students and visit the hostel, action would be taken against them, said Prof. Basavaraju.
