Mysuru: Observing that books are a treasure of the best thoughts and knowledge, veteran writer Dr.C.P. Krishna Kumar (CPK) has said the word ‘world’ in ‘World Book Day’ has a special significance attached to it.
Dr. CPK was speaking after inaugurating ‘World Book Day’ celebration organised jointly by Kannada Book Authority (KBA) and Chinthana Chittara Sahitya- Samskrutika Vedike, at the Park located in front of Kannada Book Authority outlet on Maruthi temple road, behind Kamakshi Hospital here yesterday by pushing a push-cart loaded with books.
Maintaining that it is books which make us ‘Vishwamanava’ in the true sense, Dr.CPK said that the word ‘Book’ and ‘Samskruti’ were one and the same, meaning sweetness and light.
Noting that the two words display book culture, he asserted that there can be no alternative to books. Stating that ‘book culture’ may have temporarily taken a back seat because of the advent of visual media, Dr.CPK said that there is no denying the fact that books being a treasure of knowledge and thoughts always excite us.

Underlining the role of books in imparting knowledge to the people, he stressed on the need for promoting book culture among all ages as reading will always help one in improving concentration.
Noted writer Dr. R.V. S. Sundaram, KBA – Bengaluru Administrative Officer Mahadevaiah, Sales Manager Ningaraj Chittannavar, R. Sudheendra Kumar, Neelagiri Gowda and others were present.
Birth and death anniversary of Shakespeare
Marking World Book Day and birth and death anniversaries of renowned English Playwright William Shakespeare, the Chamundipuram Branch of City Central Library had organised an exhibition of books of famous writers yesterday at its premises.
Inaugurating the programme, Corporator M.V. Ramprasad opined that education should be pursued not just for employment but for knowledge too which would bring good employment, wealth and honour. He added that Chamundipuram library would be upgraded with e-library facilities.
Earlier, floral tributes were offered to a portrait of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, Father of Library and Information Science Movement in India.
On the occasion, Ramprasad distributed books to students preparing for competitive examinations.
Library Staff Manjula, Radhamani, Bhavya, C. Sandeep, Prem, Manjunath, Dharmendra and others were present.
