The news item titled “Rs. 1.50 crore collected as fines every month” appearing in SOM dated Feb.21 is really disturbing.

The Government of India, Government of Karnataka and Mysuru City Traffic Police are spending lakhs of rupees to educate the public about the traffic rules. But the fines collected indicate that the education has not percolated to the minds of the undisciplined vehicle owners.

Though Mysuru City Traffic Police are in the forefront for organising various types of educative traffic awareness days and traffic awareness weeks, it is sad to note that motorists have miserably failed to respond to their sincere efforts.

With the bumper collection of fines, Mysuru City Traffic Police can spend a part of the fines towards the following expenses which will be of immense help to the law-abiding citizens :

a) To install or replace all existing traffic signal lights with “high mast signal lights.” This will help the law-abiding motorists from their un-intentional signal light jumping, which happens by following a heavy duty vehicle in front that blocks the view of the signal light while moving.

b) To repair all defunct traffic signal lights — on top priority the signal lights at Panchavati Circle.

c) To install traffic signal lights at the busy Gokulam road and Hunsur road junction.

d) To install traffic signal lights at Ayurveda College Circle (need not wait for the completion of Irwin road widening).
