Caning lands Tumakuru teacher in jail, gets bail

January 21, 2022

Tumakuru: A Civil Court has sentenced a private school teacher to three years of rigorous imprisonment for beating a 7-year-old student in Tumakuru district.

The teacher, however, managed bail and was released after paying a fine of Rs. 10,000.

The verdict, which was reserved by the Third Additional Civil Judge Sharada Koppad in December last year, was delivered on Jan. 18, a statement issued by the Education Department said on Thursday.

Angered over her pupil’s lackadaisical attitude towards studies, the teacher caned the student injuring his left eye. The incident took place on Feb. 17, 2011.

The girl’s parents lodged a complaint with Tilak Park Police Station.

Police investigated the allegation and a charge sheet was filed before the Court.
