Cauvery Action Committee mulls intensified protest

September 21, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: Cauvery Action Committee has decided to take every associations and organisations of the district into confidence, before finalising the future course of action to save Cauvery water.

At a meeting held in Jaladarshini Guest here on Sunday, the Committee also decided to meet again on next Saturday (Sept. 23)  to work out the modalities of the next round of agitation to be held on a bigger scale and appoint prominent leaders of all associations and organisations of the district as office-bearers of the Cauvery Action Committee.

Speaking at the meeting, Committee member and Pro-Kannada activist Mugur Nanjundaswamy said that “Grave injustice has been meted out to the State with respect to Cauvery water sharing. There is an urgent need to  hold agitation at a bigger level in the State. Let us start indefinite protest at K.R. Circle from next week.”

“When out of power, Congress leaders participated in many agitations organised over Cauvery water dispute. They also took out a padayatra demanding implementation of Mekedatu Drinking Water Project. But after coming to power, they have forgotten Cauvery dispute. They are more interested in the implementation of their pre-poll guarantees, than resolving the long running dispute,” he regretted.

Another Member of the Committee P.C. Nagaraj, who also spoke at the meeting said “Fight is neither against a party nor Government. I appeal everyone to participate in the agitation irrespective of their political affiliations with the common intent of saving Cauvery water.”

Other members M. Manjunath, M.J. Sureshgowda and Mohankumar Gowda who also aired their opinions at the meeting felt that intensified agitation was needed to save Cauvery water, observe bandh and in addition, fight the case legally in the Court. They pointed out that the fight for Cauvery water is restricted to just Mandya and Mysuru districts.

“Even though Cauvery water is being supplied to Bengaluru also, they (residents of Bengaluru) are not showing any interest in Cauvery dispute. It is not good that the MPs and MLAs are silent in this regard. The ongoing protest should be intensified and the Cauvery Action Committee should be formed at the State level,” they said
