New Delhi: The Cauvery Water Management Authority set up by the Union Ministry of Water Resources to resolve the inter-State water dispute will have its first meeting on July 2. The meeting will take place in Central Water Commission’s headquarters, New Delhi.
The meeting will be led by CWC Chairman S. Masood Husain, nominated by the Ministry as Chairman of the Authority. The agenda of the meeting states that issues requiring immediate attention will be discussed, including direction to the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, a technical arm of the Authority.
The Committee will be given directions, including information on the total residual storage in Banasurasagar (Kerala), Hemavathy, Harangi, Kabini and Krishna Raja Sagar (all Karnataka), Lower Bhavani, Amaravathy and Mettur (all Tamil Nadu) as on June 1.
Data regarding actual yield in the basin and withdrawals/release of water in the basin during the period between June 1 and 30 will be sought from the Committee. The panel will also be told to draw up a format for maintaining data of inflow, outflow, withdrawal, storage, rainfall, crop area and domestic and industrial requirement.
The Committee will be directed to bring out indications of distress, if any, in the basin. “The panel will be told to submit the plan of action for three ten-day periods (for water release), beginning July, duly complying with all aspects of the judgement of the Court in this regard.
The Authority may consider requesting CWC to submit proposal for setting up communication network to assess hydrological conditions,” the agenda said. In its first meeting, the Authority may deliberate on strategy for framing rules of business, within the overall paradigm of the gazette notification of June 1.
