Every few months, Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation’s (CESC) green- uniformed staff go around Mysuru pruning tree branches that intrude into overhead electricity lines, a necessary exercise given the safety risks posed by overgrown branches to power cables.

On Sept. 9, this pruning drive was carried out on New Kantharaj Urs Road, Kuvempunagar.

What is not welcome is what happens after the branches are cut. Instead of being cleared away, the lopped-off branches are simply left lying on the road and footpath, where they remain for days until they either rot or are dragged back by exasperated residents.

This is not a minor inconvenience. Freshly cut branches, with their sharp, splintered edges, narrow the road and pose a genuine hazard to two-wheeler riders and pedestrians, particularly after dark when they are barely visible.

It appears CESC staff consider their job complete the moment a branch is chopped, with no thought given to what happens next. There seems to be no coordination between the Electricity Department and the Municipality on debris clearance.

Surely this is not difficult to fix. CESC could coordinate with the Mysuru City Corporation to have branches cleared within a day of pruning or simply arrange its own pick-up vehicle to follow the crew and cart away the debris. Either would cost little compared to the accidents it would prevent.

I hope the authorities take note and ensure that pruning drives end with clear roads, not hazards.
