Chennai City F.C Appoint new head coach as they look for success this season in I-League

December 17, 2020

Chennai City F.C. will again be taking part in the I League in India this season and are looking ahead to a positive future for the club, following the appointment of a new head coach. The aim for the club will of course be to progress from the current league into the top division, known as the Indian Super league. The recent appointment has seen the odds shorten on the side to gain promotion this season, at least based on the forecasts of international sports betting sites like those listed at Asiabet.org. This is despite the fairly underwhelming 2019/20 campaign, so it will now be fascinating to see the impact that the new head coach makes on the progression of the side moving forward.

Singapore’s Akbar Nawas was the previous head coach of the side but of course parted ways from the CCFC back in October. That has led to continued speculation about who would next take charge of the club and this was finally announced that it would be Satyasagara, who was also a former assistant coach at the club. The former champions appointed him to take over at club and feel he can be the key to get the side back to success and getting back into the top flight.

Following his appointment, Satyasagara said “I am delighted for the new opportunity that has come my way. As everyone knows I was working with Akbar Nawas and I am familiar with the CCFC culture and setup. I am also excited to work with young local talents. The local talent in Tamil Nadu has always excited me and I am waiting to see what is in store for us this year”. This statement shows that he is excited about the potential future of the club, whilst also understanding the culture and previous success of Chennai City F.C. Satyasagara will be bringing a depth of experience to the club and has now been coaching for around 26 years, which is just what the squad need a present.

This was also backed up by club owner, Rohit Ramesh. He said, “He has been with us for two years now. He knows the culture and the pedigree of our club keeping in mind to promote our local talent. We wish him the best.” It is clear that they are both looking at the talent pool of local players and how these can help build the club back to success within the future. However, he does have some big shoes to fill, as Nawas had guided Chennai City F.C to the I-League title in his first full season in charge, back in 2018/19.

This appointment has clearly given the squad some confidence and expectations are that they can have a very successful upcoming season and push for promotion. The season will be starting on January 9th, as Chennai will open up the campaign, as they take on Gokulam Kerala FC.
