Mysuru: A team of 15 Corporators, representing Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), are on a tour to study other Corporations. They have left the city on Aug. 8 along with Govindappa, a development officer.
The Corporators are on a tour to three City Corporations — Hubballi-Dharwad, Vijayapura and Ballari — to witness the best practices followed there and share the best works done by them to improve the civic amenities in Mysuru. Sources told Star of Mysore that the Corporators will discuss administrative as well as financial matters. Issues like yearly budget planning and allocation, maintenance of slaughter houses, cleanliness, waste segregation and disposal are on the agenda.
The MCC has released Rs. 1.15 lakh for the trip and has provided food and accommodation allowance too. Apart from visiting the Corporations, the Corporators will also see the historic tourist sites including Vijayapura and Hampi.
The Corporators include M. Shivanna, Snake Shyam, Ramani, Kempanna, Shivakumar, B.V. Manjunath, Channappa, M.B. Jagadeesh, Balu, Shankar, Purushotham, Sunil and others.
They boarded a special air-conditioned mini bus on Aug. 8 and headed straight to Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) where they held a meeting with Corporators there. The meeting was also attended by MCC Commissioner G. Jagadeesha, who happened to be in Hubballi.
Corporators at HDMC gave a power-point presentation of the revenue, expenditure and waste disposal. At the meeting, issues like people-friendly measures, including regular contact with people, transparency in functioning, and installation of a helpline to address grievances, were necessary to win public confidence and provide better services to citizens were discussed.
Corporator Shivanna told their counterparts in Vijayapura that most of the Corporators from Mysuru leave their homes at 6 am to supervise cleaning and other Ward activities. “We visit the Wards, monitor cleaning and other works, keep record of employees, and interact with residents to address their grievances. This is what is expected from elected representatives,” Shivakumar told them.
Narrating the best practices followed by MCC, Shivakumar said that one of the reasons why Mysuru had in the past got the Cleanest City Award was because of a good waste management system. He advised the administration to remove slums and rehabilitate residents in multi-storey buildings which require limited space.
This morning, the Corporators were scheduled to visit Ballari and Hampi. They will leave Hampi in the evening and arrive in Mysuru tomorrow.
