City lensman rescues two from drowning in Hassan

August 17, 2021

Mysore/Mysuru: In a daring rescue act, a photography trainer from Mysuru saved two persons from drowning at Cauvery River near Konanuru in Arkalgud taluk of Hassan on Sunday.

Giri Manju managed to rescue both of them though the water currents were in full force. A faculty in photography at Rural Development and Self-employment Training Institute (RUDSETI) in Mysuru, Giri Manju was photographing scenic moments of water and nature at a hanging bridge near Konanuru as it was a Sunday and a holiday on account of Independence Day.

Also, an active member of National Adventure Foundation (NAF), Manju spotted a young man, 23-year-old Naveen rescuing 94-year-old Dasegowda who had jumped into the water to commit suicide at around 6 pm. However, after a few moments, Manju saw both Naveen and Dasegowda being washed away by the strong water currents.

Without having any second thoughts, Giri Manju leapt into the water and managed to save both of them. According to local villagers, both Dasegowda and Naveen were being carried away by water in great force. Manju, however, managed to save them as he had undergone training in water sports and knew the knack of wading through strong currents.

Later it came to light that Dasegowda was allegedly disappointed with his family and he had tried to commit suicide. Later, Dasegowda and Naveen were taken to the Police Station where the Police and public lauded Manju for the daring act.
