Mysuru: “The power of social media is yet to be harnessed to its fullest potential by the marginalised of the society in their endeavour towards equality and dignity in the society,” said Dr. Bhargavi D. Hemmige, Head, Department of Journalism, SBRR Mahajana College, Mysuru, speaking at the “International Conference-2017, Quest for Equality” organised by Government of Karnataka at University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK Campus in Bengaluru from July 21 to 23.

Stating that many marginalised are at the risk of digital exclusion, she said the government should enable access to the socially and economically challenged groups, especially the students of rural areas, to promote social inclusion.

Dr. Bhargavi was among the 300 speakers at the event.

The other speaker in the technical session titled “Social Movements and Social Transformation” was Prof. Angela P. Harris, Department of Law, UC Berkeley School of Law, who examined Critical Law Theory stating how law sometimes reinforces the subordination of marginalised groups.

Another speaker Dr. Corinne Lennox, Professor in Human Rights at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, spoke on the role of advocacy groups in bringing the attention of local problems in international forums.

Prof. R.M. Channaveer, Director, Central University of Karnataka, chaired the session. Twenty journalism students from Mahajana attended the seminar.
