Mysore/Mysuru: Dr. Purnima Madhivanan, Dr. Karl Krupp and Poornima Jayakrishna of city’s Public Health Research Institute of India (PHRII), made presentations at the International Papillomavirus Conference in Washington DC, USA recently.
The conference with the theme “Coming Together for HPV Elimination” drew more than 2,000 scientists, students and leadership from NGOs, government and the private sector to share strategies for prevention of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and their associated diseases, especially cervical cancer.
“Most people don’t realise that HPV is the cause of many common cancers in men and women. Elimination will go far beyond just preventing more than 70,000 deaths among Indian women with cervical cancer each year,” said Dr. Purnima.
The conference focused on a wide range of HPV-related topics including HPV-related cancers, HPV vaccination, screening for cervical and other cancers and cancer treatment and therapy.
