City street vendors appeal for extension of micro-loan scheme

Mysuru: City’s Sri. Chamundeshwari Shramjeevi Rastebadi Vyaparigala Rakshana Samiti has appealed Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to extend ‘Badavara Bandhu’ micro-loan scheme to street vendors, to the city as well and come to the rescue of the city street vendors by assuring them of social security.

In a press release, Samiti President Doddamane Manjunath said that street vendors are poor people who avail loans from private money lenders for their day-to-day business at exorbitant interest. Sometimes, most of the vendors, a majority of them from rural areas, return home badly affecting their livelihood.

Besides, street vendors are also subjected to harassment by the Police and local authorities. As such, the Government should look into the matter and take measures to provide designated spaces for street vendors, advance interest free micro-loans to them for carrying out day-to-day business and to ensure a sustained livelihood free of hassles, for them, the release said.
