Co-curricular activities also critical for students: Ex-VC

November 30, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: Former Vice-Chancellor of Akkamahadevi Women’s University Dr. Sabiha Bhumigowda emphasised that students, beyond striving for academic ranks, should also actively participate in activities that contribute to others’ livelihoods.

She argued against the notion that intelligence is solely reflected in academic achievements and highlighted the importance of practical skills. Dr.Sabiha shared these insights during the recent inauguration of the IQAC and Cultural Wing, NSS, Red Cross, Scouts and Guides, NCC and Sports and Cultural Wings of Maharani’s Arts College.

Expressing concern about high-scoring students lacking practical skills, Dr.Sabiha asserted that engagement in cultural, sports and other activities equips students with the ability to shape their livelihoods.

She stressed that academic performance is just one aspect of life, and employers, in addition to academic records, seek skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork.

Dr.Sabiha pointed out that involvement in extracurricular and co-curricular activities enhances self-confidence and fosters personality development, which are crucial for success in career.

Highlighting the advantages of studying in Women’s Colleges, Dr.Sabiha suggested that female students should make the most of the opportunities available to them.

She noted the substantial participation of over 2,700 girl students at Maharani’s Arts College, with 400 engaged in NSS activities, 120 in NCC, 200 in Red Cross and 45 in Scouts and Guides.

College Principal Dr. B.V. Vasanth Kumar, IQAC Convenor Dr. N. Prakash, faculty M. Nanjundaiah, Ashvini and others were present on the occasion.
