Collective effort needed to make Mysuru drug-free: DCP

August 19, 2026

Mysuru: Collective effort involving the Police, Health and Education Departments and civil society is essential to make Mysuru a drug-free city, said DCP (Crime and Traffic) K.S. Sundar Raj.

Speaking at the ‘Drugs Free Mysuru’ awareness programme, organised by Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology (BHIO), in association with St. Philomena’s College and other organisations at the BHIO premises in Hebbal here recently, he said that substance abuse could have serious physical, mental, social consequences.

The DCP said that peer pressure is a reason for youngsters to experiment with drugs and added that young people should refuse such offers and inform the Police about those encouraging drug uses or involved in drug peddling.

Though drugs might provide temporary pleasure or relief, regular consumption could lead to addiction and adversely affect physical and mental health, besides causing social and financial problems, he warned.

Health and Education Departments, community organisations and other stakeholders should work together to create awareness. Schools and colleges should educate youngsters about substance abuse, he suggested.

Chief Medical Oncologist of BHIO Dr. Avinash said that the fight against drugs should become a social movement rather than remain confined to one-time programmes. Every section of society should participate.

Senior Radiation Oncologist Dr. Vinaykumar Muttagi said that addiction often begin at a young age and sensitising students in schools and colleges towards a drug-free lifestyle could help create a healthier society.

District Mental Health Officer Dr. Nagesh Aradhya said that the district mental health team provides free treatment and counselling, while tobacco cessation services offered nicotine gums and patches. Those facing mental distress or suicidal thoughts could seek help through helpline 14416, he added.

Dr. Abhilash, Dr. Santosh, Gowtham Dhamerla, Viraj, Vivek, Fr. Prasad, Fr. Roshan, St. Philomena’s College Principal Ravi and others were present.
