Columbia Asia holds awareness session on Healthy Kidneys

Chronic kidney disease affecting millions of people, radically curtailing their quality of lives and forcing them to live on the edge is a major health concern worldwide. The most common cause of chronic kidney disease in India is Diabetes.  

According to statistics, every 5th Indian is a diabetic, 30% out of whom land up in end stage of kidney disease in the course of time. Chronic kidney diseases have five stages wherein the early stages diet and good control of BP and balanced sugar levels in the body is needed.

Keeping this in mind, Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysuru, had recently organised an awareness session on Healthy Kidneys to discuss the various methods that can be followed to prevent kidney diseases.

During the talk, Dr. Uthappa, Consultant Nephrologist, Columbia Asia Hospital, said, “Much like cardiovascular disease, in many ways kidney diseases are a lifestyle disorder and can be controlled and prevented by adopting healthy ways of living. There are several easy ways to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease. It is imperative that we educate people about the same, much like we are doing to contain the epidemic of cardiovascular disease.”

Highlighting on the importance of preventive measures for kidney diseases, Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Consultant Urologist, Columbia Asia Hospital, said, “Simple lifestyle changes at an individual level can go a long way in preventing kidney diseases.”

The team of doctors laid out the following steps one can follow to prevent kidney diseases:

Drink plenty of fluids; Exercise daily; Maintain a balanced diet; Keep your blood sugar level and BP in control; Quit harmful habits.
