Mysuru: Para athlete K.S. Shilpa of Kanchugaranakoppal village, K.R. Nagar taluk in Mysuru district, representing India at ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 at Glasgow in Scotland, won bronze medal in the shot put F57 event yesterday.

Shilpa, who had finished fourth with a personal best throw of 7.26 metres, was elevated to bronze medal position after Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified after an official review.

With this, India was handed its first double podium finish in ongoing Commonwealth Games as India’s Sharmila Dhankar won gold with a throw of 9.81 metres in the same event, while Ghana’s Zinabu Issah won silver with 8.65 metres.

Speaking to Star of Mysore this morning from Glasgow, Shilpa expressed her happiness for winning a medal.

“It is a proud feeling for having won a medal for the country at the Commonwealth Games. Having gone through a lot of struggle over the past years, a podium finish at one of the top most international events is a good feeling. The achievement has also brought smiles on my parents, who have been my backbone throughout my life. I am also grateful for the State Government and Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for extending the necessary help which will inspire athletes like me to achieve more at the international level.”

My next goal is to win a medal at the Paralympics to be held at Los Angeles, USA during 2028, said Shilpa, who also thanked her volleyball coach Raghavendra, who persuaded her to focus on athletics.

Meanwhile, Indian athletes continued to impress on Day-5 with Sarvesh Kushare scripting history by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men’s high jump.

Adding to Indian medal tally were weightlifters Valluri Ajaya Babu, who won silver in the men’s 79-kg category and Gyaneshwari Yadav, who also won silver in women’s 53-kg category.

On Day-5, India’s medal tally increased to 10 medals (2 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze).
