Construction workers seek hike in relief package, stage protest

July 12, 2021

Mysore/Mysuru: About 30 construction workers, under the banner of Karnataka Construction Worker Unions Co-ordination Committee, affiliated to AITUC-CITU etc., urging the Government for fulfilment of their various demands, staged a protest near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office this morning.

Their demands mainly included hike in the relief package from Rs. 3,000 per month to Rs. 10,000 per month for three months, transparency in purchase of ration kits, tool kits, compensation to registered construction workers, who had died of COVID and provide medical expenses for workers, recovered from COVID among others.

The protesters said that they had submitted memorandums to the Government seeking hike in the existing relief package from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 10,000, which has been not met.

They said that due to COVID induced lockdown, construction activities were stopped resulting in hundreds of workers being rendered jobless making it difficult for them to earn their livelihood.

They also alleged that Rs. 5,000 relief package announced by the State Government during the first wave of COVID had not reached 1.2 lakh beneficiaries and the officials concerned were giving reasons for not providing the same.

They said that whatever the reasons be, construction workers were suffering and urged the Government to look into the matter at the earliest and provide relief to them.

Somaraje Urs, H.M. Basavaiah, H.S. Harish, K. Manju, K. Nanjappa Basavanagudi and others led the protest.
