Copious rain shoots up groundwater level in district

November 5, 2019

Mysuru, Nov.5 (SBD&US)- The groundwater level in the district has gone up substantially owing to good rain beyond the expected limit.

According to a report from District Groundwater Department of Groundwater Directorate, out of the 59 study borewells in the district, 45 recorded an increase of 76% in groundwater level while 11 recorded a drop of 19%. Excessive silt in the other three borewells was an hindrance to record any change in water level.

The study borewells in Nanjangud, Hunsur, Mysuru, T. Narasipur, K.R. Nagar, H.D. Kote and Periyapatna have all recorded a good increase in groundwater with the district average standing at 7.09 meter, according to Geologists of the Department. The groundwater level is said to bring an end to drinking water shortage, keep drought at bay and help maintain a good balance of atmospheric temperature.

Senior Geologist Chowdhary said that the monthly report on groundwater has been submitted to the Government and expects the level to further go up if rain continues.

Compared to last year, there is a sharp increase in groundwater level in most of the taluks thus providing a promising picture for the coming months.
