Corruption, casteism and immorality worst than Coronavirus: Former Speaker

Former Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly addressing the gathering at Pathrakartara Bhavan on Tyagaraja Road in city on Sunday.

Mysore/Mysuru: Corruption, casteism and immorality are worst than Coronavirus which needs to be banished from society, opined former Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly Krishna. He was speaking after releasing the 2021 calender brought out by University of Mysore Alumni Association and Dr. B.G.V. Groups at Pathrakartara Bhavan here on Sunday.

Krishna said good days would not come by mere kicking out COVID-19 pandemic, but good days would prevail only after  throwing out social evils like corruption, casteism and immorality, which have become stumbling block in the nation’s health and development. Casteism has been a biggest curse and along with it, politics was done in the name of religion. The people would understand its ill-effects after ten years. Seeing the current situation in the country, people should question themselves as to why did they want Democracy, he added.

The veteran politician said the current state of politics in the country would give an impression whether India has a future or not. “I have seen more defeats than victory in my political life. Earlier, people were taking care of election expenses by contributing Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 each. In one of the elections that I contested, Rs. 70,000 was saved. Now, each candidate will spend crores of rupees on fighting election. Will those who spend so much of money on winning the election, keep quiet after their victory? Hitherto, the politicians were good natured and scared of society. But now, our intelligence has increased only in cheating and humanity     is missing.”

Pointing out that a number of agitations were going on now in the country, he said that when Indira Gandhi clamped Emergency, a new political party was born under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan and even came to power. It is impossible to imagine that kind of protest now. “It is happy to note that farmers of Punjab and Haryana are on indefinite strike seeking withdrawal of three farm laws,” he said.

Krishna bemoaned that bureaucrats were doing all wrong things. If bureaucrats were demons, politicians were ‘super demons.’ Of late, self-proclaimed Godman Yuvaraj, a cheat has been accused of cheating people in high posts, but the society had seen a number of such Yuvarajas in the past. If they were punished, others would not have dared to do such things. Fear of law was missing among people, he noted.

Veteran freedom fighter, Y.C. Revanna, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat Mysuru President Dr. Y.D. Rajanna, Journalist Amshi Prasannakumar and Mysuru District Congress Committee President Dr. B.J. Vijaykumar were present.
