Cows killed by tiger in South Kodagu

June 21, 2018

Gonikoppal: A tiger, which entered the cowshed of Ajjamada Viju Cariappa in Biruga village coming under Srimangala Gram Panchayat limits, has killed two cows besides dragging away one of the cows and eating it in the wee hours of yesterday.

While the carcass of one cow was found inside the cowshed, the half eaten carcass of another cow was found in the bushes near the field.

When Cariappa went to the cowshed in the morning, he found the carcass of a cow near the door with other cows wailing. He then counted the cows and found one of them missing. When he launched a search for the missing cow, he found the half eaten carcass of the cow in the bush near the field.

Cariappa, who was working in Bengaluru, had resigned his job and had started Dairy Farming in his village. He had over 30 cows and was selling hundreds of litres of milk.

It is suspected that the tiger may have come from Brahmagiri Reserve Forest. Forest Department staff, who arrived at the spot, inspected the place and assured of capturing the tiger by placing a cage. By afternoon, the Forest staff arrived with a cage and placed the same at the spot to trap the elusive tiger.

Meanwhile, JD(S) District President Sanketh Poovaiah, who arrived at the spot, spoke with Cariappa and expressed regrets over the functioning of the Forest Department. He alleged that Kodago CCF Lingaraju, was not taking any steps despite a large number of cattle being killed by tiger attacks in South Kodagu. He demanded the CCF to come to the spot and instruct his junior officers to capture the tiger using the latest technologies and warned of complaining to the Minister if the Department fails to take action.
