CSRTI holds regional workshop on ‘Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry’

To achieve self-sufficiency in production of quality silk in India

Mysuru:  The Southern Zone regional workshop on ‘Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry’ was held at Central Sericultural Research & Training Institute (CSRTI), Srirampura, Manandavadi Road, Mysuru, recently for achieving self-sufficiency in production of quality silk in India.

Presiding over the workshop of CSS, Central Silk Board (CSB), Ministry of Textiles, Dr. V. Sivaprasad, Director, CSRTI, Mysuru, addressed the gathering of around 400 participants consisting of Senior officials of State Departments, Scientists and Technical Staff from Central Silk Board and progressive farmers from Karnataka,   Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

The Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry scheme would be implemented from 2017-18 to 2019-20 for Central Sector. An allocation of Rs.2,161.68 crore has been approved for the Scheme and expected to increase the silk production from  30,348 MTs (2016-17) to 38,500 MTs annually by the end of 2019-20.

The scheme will be implemented by the Ministry of Textiles through CSB and DoS’.

CSRTI  Director emphasised that the scheme will promote women empowerment and livelihood opportunities to SC/ST   and other weaker sections of the society. The scheme will also help to increase productive employment from 85 lakhs to one crore persons by 2020.
