Mysuru: A 68-year-old woman from Alanahalli was allegedly cheated of Rs. 31.10 lakh by cyber fraudsters who posed as Government officials and threatened her with a fake money laundering case. A case has been registered at CEN Police Station.

According to the complaint, the victim received a phone call on July 23 from an unidentified person who introduced himself as Rahul Kulkarni and claimed to be a ‘Government data officer.’ He told her that her personal documents had been misused.

The next day, July 24, another fraudster contacted her through a WhatsApp video call, identifying himself as Sandeep Rao, a Mumbai Police officer. He told her that a money laundering case had been registered in her name and threatened her with legal action.

The fraudsters then obtained details of her husband’s fixed deposits and instructed her to encash the fixed deposits, transfer the proceeds to her savings account and subsequently remit the money through RTGS to multiple bank accounts specified by them.

They also warned her not to reveal the matter to anyone and instructed her to remain in constant contact with them.

Fearing the consequences, the woman transferred a total of Rs. 31,10,200 to the accounts provided by the fraudsters.

On Aug. 2, after verifying the documents sent by them, the elderly woman realised that she had been duped.

 She immediately contacted the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) helpline and lodged a complaint.

Based on the complaint, CEN Police have registered a case.
