Day-long workshop on Child Rights held

Mysuru: A day-long workshop on Child Rights and Act, Role of Hospitals in Child Adoption, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, and Medical Termination Of Pregnancy Act, Prohibition Child Marriage Act of 2016 jointly organised by Mysuru Zilla Panchayat, Department of Women and Child Welfare, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and JSS Nursing College was held for nursing students at the Rajendra Auditorium in JSS Hospital premises in city on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the workshop, DLSA Member-Secretary C.G. Mohammed Mujeerullah said that it was important to create awareness about child rights and Acts.

He said that present day, children were being denied their rights and added there was a need to work more to prevent female foeticide.

Women and Child Welfare Deputy Director K. Radha said that the department had booked around 16 child trafficking cases during 2016 and added that a few people were unknowingly involved in the exchange of babies which amounted to violation under the POCSO Act.

Stating that around 40 percent of the population is between the age group of 0-18 years and added that child rights had to be given importance apart from preventing child marriages.

JSS Multispecialty Hospital Director Dr. M.D. Ravi, JSS Nursing College Principal Sheela Williams and others were present.
