Debt-ridden farmers commit suicide

March 25, 2019

Hunsur: In separate incidents, two debt-ridden farmers committed suicide by hanging at Hanagodu hobli in the taluk.

The deceased farmers are Uday (45) of Habbanakuppe village and Chandregowda (60) of B.R. Kawal village in Hanagodu hobli.

Uday, who owns four acre land, had taken a loan of Rs.6.5 lakh from Karnataka Bank at Chilkunda to grow tobacco, ragi and other crops. In the other incident, Chandregowda, who owns 3.10 acre land, had taken a loan of Rs.3.5 lakh from Cauvery Kalpatharu Grammena Bank at Hunsur to grow maize and ragi. Unable to repay the loan as the crops failed, he took the extreme step on Saturday. Hunsur Rural Police, who have registered separate cases, are investigating.
