Defective number plates on the rise

June 3, 2017

Sir,

Nowadays it has become quite common to see vehicles, especially two-wheelers, to move around in the city with missing or defective number plates.

Recently I have noticed one such vehicle, with blocked number plate (see photo) but could not follow it as I was in a hurry to go on my work. In this case the serial number is totally blocked with white paint and both rider and pillion are going without wearing a helmet.

In other cases either one alphabet or one digit is being removed, mainly in the rear number plates, which is an offence under rule 190 Clause 50 of MV Act. In some cases, the registration number is written in too small size, so that it becomes difficult for the cameras to catch them.

Many vehicles, including cars, are moving without number plate either at front or rear, which is also an offense. All these are being done to escape from the violations they do while on road.

It is requested that the Traffic Police may conduct a special drive exclusively to confiscate such vehicles or fine them to the extent possible and announce the number of such vehicles caught on regular basis, so that others may not do it next time. If this violation is not corrected there is no meaning of installing CCTV cameras by spending crores of rupees.
