Do we need more road humps?

March 25, 2019

Sir,

In the past couple of weeks, there have been several letters to the editor on constructing more road humps on the main roads of Mysuru. While these writers have genuine concern for the road safety.

Wherever a road hump is built, invariably rain water accumulates on both sides of the hump. Once this happens, some water percolates through the poor quality of the road and when the vehicles passes through this pool of water it creates elongated pothole on both sides of the hump (see pic.).

Pothole at road hump.

Though in the above photograph, the car escaped just with a scratch on the bottom of the vehicle, I have seen low clearance cars getting stuck at this junction !

Again this photograph is at the tri-junction of Gokulam Main Road and Hunsur Road. If you observe the photograph carefully you will notice that the hump is placed on the Gokulam Main Road leaving the tri-junction. By placing the hump there, the traffic at the junction gets clogged even more !

This morning I noticed that the elongated pothole is filled with loose soil (see pic.). Obviously some VIP’s car must have got stuck at the hump and he must have ordered a makeshift repair. Even if you put asphalt on top of this soil, I guarantee that potholes will reappear soon.

So my earnest suggestion is to remove such road humps and install workable traffic signals.
