In his column ‘Over a Cup of Evening Tea,’ Dr. K. Javeed Nayeem has lovingly paid a fulsome praise in portraying the personality of late Dr. N. Kannan, who left for his heavenly abode on the 31st May 2020.
Ever since I settled down in Mysuru in 1992 after my return to this city, I used to frequently visit Kannan Pathology Lab on Sayyaji Rao Road for my blood test. For people of Mysuru there was no necessity for advertisement about the Pathology Lab, for his popularity spread through word of mouth for the name Kannan and quality was interchangeable.
Dr. Nayeem has traced his modest beginning on Dhanvanthri Road and described Kannan’s pioneering spirit and the risks he has taken and now how it has grown into a great institution. His Lab was always teeming with people.
What was unique about his Pathology Lab was, unlike in other pathology labs, Kannan never assigned the drawing of blood to any assistant for he followed it till the end of his working life. Probably, he believed that it was his dharma and his son Dr. Lakshman is continuing the tradition.
Kannan was a picture of concentration with gentle smile playing on his face and slightly bending over, he would insert the needle to draw the blood. I certainly miss him. His sons have inherited a great legacy and knowing both of them, I am sure they will ably fill the void. May his soul rest in peace.
