Driving vehicle sans licence is an offence: Judge tells students

Mysore/Mysuru: Expressing concern over college students riding two-wheelers without any licence, Senior Civil Judge Devaraj Bhute, who is also the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Member-Secretary said it is an offence that attracts penalty.

He was speaking after inaugurating an orientation programme on Legal Education organised jointly by Karnataka Legal Services Authority, NSS Unit of University of Mysore, Information Department and Nehru Yuva Kendra as part of 75th year of Indian independence and to commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda at Seshadripuram Degree College on Hebbal Ring road here yesterday.

Pointing out that everyone who wants to ride or drive a vehicle must possess a valid Driving Licence (DL) as per the provisions of Indian Motor Vehicles Act, Bhute said that it is also important that the vehicles have a valid insurance cover.

Stressing that students had to adapt to the laws of the land, the Judge said the RC owners of vehicles will be held responsible if any accident takes place in the absence of valid DL and Insurance.

Cautioning that the vehicle owners have to cough up the compensation amount to victims of accidents in case the vehicle does not have an insurance cover at the time of accident, Bhute stressed on the need for everyone to behave in a responsible manner.

DLSA Panel advocate G.S. Shivaswamy, College Principal Prof. K. Sowmya Erappa, faculty Dr. C.P. Lavanya and others were present.
