Elephant dies during delivery in Kodagu

Gonikoppal: A pregnant elephant, unable to push the calf out during delivery, died of pain at Kaikeri village in Ponnampet Forest Zone. The elephant, aged about 13 years was found unconscious in the coffee estate of Ashik Chengappa. Though the elephant had developed labour pain, it was unable to push the calf outside, which has resulted in its death.

Forest Department veterinarian Dr. Umashankar and other officials, who went to see the condition of the pregnant elephant on Friday, found it dead following which Dr. Umashankar conducted post-mortem on the elephant and later the dead elephant was buried in the coffee estate.

DCF Christharaj, ACF Sripathi, Ponnampet RFO Uttaiah and others visited the spot.
