Enact law to punish public insults against women: Banu Mushtaq

July 6, 2025

Mysuru: International Booker Prize winner writer Banu Mushtaq  has called for a dedicated law to punish individuals who publicly insult women.

Speaking at an interaction organised by the Mysuru District Journalists’ Association (MDJA) at Patrakarthara Bhavan yesterday, she expressed strong disapproval over recent derogatory remarks made by MLC N. Ravikumar against Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh.

“Those who insult women in public should not only face legal consequences but also undergo psychological treatment,” she stated, recalling a previous instance where C.T. Ravi had made objectionable comments against Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar.

“These women are not ordinary individuals. They have the stature and strength to respond, but it’s unacceptable that they are subjected to such public humiliation,” she said.

Banu Mushtaq reiterated that democratic power must be exercised with responsibility and dignity, and that public figures must be held accountable for abusive language. “There is a dire need for a legislation that penalises such behaviour,” she insisted.

Reflecting on her political journey, Mushtaq said, “Politics runs in our blood, but today, it has turned into a platform for extortion and power play. I too was once in politics and won twice with a huge margin in the Hassan City Municipal Council against strong contenders. But I chose to step away.” “I don’t rely on referencing books when I write — my work comes from life experience. Our thoughts and literature are powerful, and we will bring them to global attention,” Mushtaq affirmed.
