This is in reference to the SOM report (July 23) on QR code to pay water bills ‘MCC to launch QR code for easy water bill payment’. The way a faulty QR code system was implemented for Property Tax is a shining example of mismanagement and inefficiency.

If money was spent on implementing a QR code system, it should have been utilised effectively to benefit a significant number of properties. It is disheartening to see such projects not reaching their intended targets and, as a result, wasting resources.

Indeed, adopting online systems for various bills, such as water, property tax and electricity, can lead to cost-saving and greater convenience for the consumers. Similar to the existing process for electricity bills, implementing an online payment system for water bills can make the payment process more streamlined and accessible.

Holding Revenue Officers responsible for ensuring bills are paid is a crucial step in ensuring accountability and timely payment. If consumers fail to pay their bills, appropriate actions, such as disconnecting the water connection, should be taken to enforce compliance. This will not only ensure prompt payments but also discourage defaulters from evading their responsibilities.
