Farmers to stage hunger strike in Mandya tomorrow

August 22, 2023

Mandya: Condemning the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, hundreds of farmers will stage a hunger strike in front of Sir M. Visveswaraya statue in the town tomorrow (Aug. 23).

Addressing a press meet in the town recently, Bharathiya Kisan Sangha’s South Rkarnataka Region General Secretary Hadya Ramesh Babu said that there was less monsoon this year and the rains stopped when the water level at KRS Dam reached 113 ft. as against the maximum capacity of 124 ft.

He further said that despite scarcity of water for the farmers here to grow paddy and other crops, the State Government was releasing large quantity of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

To condemn and to register their protest against the release of water to Tamil Nadu, farmers will be staging a hunger strike tomorrow, he said.

Sangha leaders Panakanahalli Venkatesh, B.P. Appaji, Divya, Puttamma and Jayaram were present during the press meet.
