Fire at food-packaging unit in Nanjangud

Nanjangud: A major fire that broke out in the wee hours of today completely razed down a large-sized food-packaging unit in Tandya Industrial Area near the town.

More than 25 workers were working in the night shift at  the factory, when fire broke out at about 3 am. Soon as the fire broke out, reportedly due to a short circuit, all the workers ran to safety. The fire engulfed the entire factory within minutes, destroying packaging materials and other goods worth crores of rupees.

Eight Fire Tenders — three from Nanjangud and five from Mysuru — rushed to the spot and doused the fire in an operation that lasted over six hours.

Although the fire gutted the entire factory, destroying goods worth crores of rupees, there were no reports of any injuries to any staff.

The factory is said to be owned by one Ashwini Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh and a                                      resident of Mysuru.

The factory was functioning for the last two years and the owner was planning to set up another unit shortly, it is learnt.

Nanjangud Rural Police visited the spot.
