October 11, 2017

Mysuru: The Fifth Additional and Sessions Court in Mysuru has sentenced five members of a family to two years imprisonment and ordered them to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 each for harassing a  woman for dowry.

The convicted persons are 26-year-old Nasir Hussain, son of Shoukath Hussain, 45-year-old Gulnas Begum, wife of Shoukath Hussain, 59-year-old Shoukath Hussain, son of late Abdul Wahab, all residents of Basaveshwara Road at K.R. Mohalla, 23-year-old Saheera Begum from Vinayakanagar and 22-year-old Gulshira Banu of Kesare in city. Saheera and Gulshira are Nasir Hussain’s sisters.

Amera Begum, a resident of Bannimantap HUDCO Colony, had filed a complaint that her husband Nasir Hussain and his family harassed her for dowry and had assaulted her in 2006. She had alleged that along with her husband and in-laws, Nasir’s sisters too used to harass  her for dowry.

Based on the complaint, the Women’s Police Station sleuths had arrested the five persons on Feb. 7, 2009 and a charge-sheet was filed in the Court.

Hearing the arguments, Judge S.M. Joshi found the five persons guilty and sentenced them to two years imprisonment and also ordered them to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 each.

The judgement was pronounced on Sept. 25, eight years after the case was booked.

Special Public Prosecutor R. Vishwanath argued for  the State.
