Mandya:  In a filmy style, a man who was escaping a Police raid on a gambling den jumped into a canal and died in Mandya last night.

According to the District Crime Record Bureau Police, they had raided a place near Chikkegowdanadoddi as they had received information about a group indulging in gambling. As the Police closed in, Madhu, one of the gamblers, fled the spot and Policemen chased him.

In his attempt to avoid being caught, Madhu jumped into a canal that passes through the village and was caught in strong water currents. He drowned in the canal, the Police said. Fire service personnel fished out the body this morning.
