Gangubai Hangal Music Varsity will soon shift to Sathagalli

Mysuru: The prestigious Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University in city that is at present functioning from the building of the Department of Primary and Secondary Education on JLB Road in Lakshmipuram will soon be shifted to Sathagalli.

The move comes following the Education Department asking the Music Varsity to vacate the premise. The new building will come up at an estimated cost of Rs. 27 crore.

The Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University, the first Music University in South India and second in the country, was established in Mysuru as the city symbolises the country’s cultural heritage. It is a centre for learning, disseminating and teaching music and performing arts.

According to Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar, Vice-Chancellor of the University, the new building will be built on eight acres of land sanctioned by MUDA near Sathagalli bus depot. The Varsity has already floated a tender to prepare a blueprint for the same.

“It will take two years to construct the building and we will approach the government for funds,” she told reporters in city this morning. Once the building is constructed, the University will operate from Sathagalli campus with additional courses and facilities, she added.

Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar said that the University Syndicate members have agreed to build the new building and the Varsity has Rs. 12 crore for the construction and Higher Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddy has promised to provide an additional Rs. 15 crore.

The Varsity has also decided to include more courses in the post-graduate level. Music, Science and Technology, Management courses will be added to the existing syllabus.
