Girish Karnad to inaugurate Bahuroopi theatre fest on Jan. 14

Mysuru:  Renowned playwright and Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad will inaugurate this year’s annual theatre festival Bahuroopi-2018, said Rangayana Director Bhagirathi Bai Kadam.

Addressing press persons at Rangayana here this morning, she said that the eight-day fest will be held from Jan. 14 to 21.

District in-Charge Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa will release the Bahuroopi souvenir while Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree will inaugurate the book and handicraft exhibition at Kalamandira premises after the formal inauguration of Bahuroopi-2018 at 5.30 am at Vanaranga.

This year, the Bahuroopi is being organised on the theme ‘Migration’ to highlight issues related to migration of people from rural areas and animals as well.

The plays, street plays, seminars and folk performances will be held at Bhoomigeetha, Kalamandira, Mini Auditorium, Kindarijogi and Vanaranga.

The theatre repertory has invited drama troupes from Pune, Manipur, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to stage plays. This apart, Rangayana artistes will be staging the plays ‘Three Sisters’ and ‘Kola.’

There will also be six one-woman shows including two Kannada and three other languages. Among these, ‘Jeevith Ya Amruth’ by Seema Biwas will be the one to watch.

The other plays at the fest include Kali Natakam (Malayalam), Museum of Spices is in Danger (Hindi-Mumbai), Pandvai (Folk Art-Madhya Pradesh), Samajswasthya (Marathi-Pune), Bhaktha Prahalada (Telangana).

Rangayana will provide an opportunity for students of select colleges to exhibit their folk skills through ‘Yuva Spandana.’  

Film Festival

The Bahuroopi Film Festival will feature screening of movies and documentaries in 24 languages. The film festival will be inaugurated by actor Vijayalakshmi Singh on Jan. 14 at 10.30 am during a function to be held at Sriranga auditorium. Another renowned actor Jai Jagadish will be the chief guest.

Seminar on ‘Migration’

The two-day national seminar on ‘Migration’ will be inaugurated by renowned playwright Mahesh Elkunchwar on Jan. 21. Writer Nanditha Haskar from Goa and State SC/ST, Nomadic, Semi Nomadic, Microscopic Tribes Development Cell Nodal Officer, Bengaluru Nodal Officer Bola Gurumurthy will be the chief guests.  The event will be presided by Writer Sainath of Mumbai.

The tickets for the plays will be available on www.bookmyshow.com. Advance tickets will be available at the ticket counter in Rangayana from Jan. 8. This apart, tickets will be available at Rangayana during the festival.
