‘Government schemes should reach lowest strata of society’

Mysuru:  A four-day training programme on ‘Duties and responsibilities of District and Taluk-level officers of Social Welfare Department and Scheduled Tribe Welfare Department and the effective implementation of Government Schemes/ programmes for overall development of Scheduled Tribe communities in Karnataka’ was recently held in city.

The event was organised by Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute (KSTRI), Mysuru, in association with Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi, at the State Institute for Urban Development, Administrative Training Institute (ATI) campus, on Lalitha Mahal Road here.

Inaugurating the programme, retired Principal Secretary and Advisor, SCSP/TSP (Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan/Tribal Sub-Plan), Social Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka, Dr. E. Venkataiah opined that reformation of tribals is possible only if officers concerned diligently work to implement Government schemes which should effectively reach the last strata of the society.

He said that the Government comes out with several schemes for the welfare of the tribals every year but the true benefits can be reaped by eligible people only if officers implement the schemes effectively without giving any room for ambiguity or bias.

Addressing the officers, KSTRI Mysuru Director Dr. T.T. Basavanagouda contended that the life of tribals in forest and on the plains is different. He observed that a few officers would be not aware of the difference due to lack of information.  He asserted that only if those officers are fully equipped with thorough information on tribals, Government schemes could be effectively implemented.

Additional Director, Social Welfare Department Urmila, Karnatak University, Dharwad Professor C.G.                                                                         Hussain Khan, KSTRI Joint Director S. Pratibha and others were present.
