Government to set up residential school for cancer-affected students

June 16, 2025

Shivamogga: Stating that 3,500 students suffering from cancer have been identified in the State, Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa said that a residential school will be set for cancer-affected students at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (popularly known as Kidwai Cancer Hospital) in Bengaluru.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Madhu Bangarappa said that the residential school will facilitate learning along with treatment for cancer students.

Maintaining that the school will be established to prevent students from being deprived of  their studies as cancer treatment may take 6 months or a year or even more, he said that the Department engaged an NGO for identifying cancer-affected students across the State.

Asserting that poor students find it difficult to continue their studies and get cancer treatment, he said that the establishment of the residential school is going to be an answer for this problem.

Noting that in the first phase, 1,500 students who badly need such a facility, will be admitted to the school, Madhu Bangarappa said that the officials have been asked to mark 3 acres of land belonging to the Department near Kidwai Hospital.

‘Parents of children admitted to the school, who come here for taking care of their wards, will also be given free food and shelter. The school will have a playground and a Library too,’ he said adding that it has been planned to start the school from this July itself after ensuring necessary infrastructure and funding.
