Mysuru: A woman, who came in the words of a friend on social media has lost Rs. 15.34 lakh to the latter, adding to the increasing number of online fraud cases.
The victim, a Government employee residing at Vidyaranyapuram here, accepted the friend request of one Dr. Krishnamohan on Facebook. The suspect, portrayed himself as a mutual friend, on FB. He later collected her WhatsApp number and began chatting with her. He told her to be a resident of Florida.
On Feb. 1, the suspect allegedly messaged the victim, saying that he was sending a valuable gift and Rs. 2 crore cash. She didn’t take it seriously. However, she got a call on Feb. 3, with a person saying that, he was calling her from the Delhi Airport and there was a parcel in her name, containing valuable articles.
On the pretext of procedures for Airport Exchange, he later asked her to pay the tax to collect the gift received from abroad.
The unsuspecting victim, transferred Rs. 15.34 lakh in different stages online, but the caller was insisting to pay more. The victim, who grew suspicious at this stage, called her FB friend Dr. Krishnamohan, who also spoke in similar tone.
The woman has lodged a complaint at Cyber, Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Offence Police Station.
