Sir,
To improve traffic management along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), I request the introduction of a synchronised ‘Green wave’ or grid-type traffic signalling system. This will improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and reduce vehicular emissions.
The ORR is used by a large number of commuters every day. However, motorists often have to stop at consecutive intersections, resulting in unnecessary delays, congestion and increased fuel consumption.
Under a synchronised signalling system, traffic signals could be timed in such a way that vehicles travelling at a prescribed speed, say 50 or 60 km/hour, can pass through a series of intersections without having to stop at every signal.
Such a system could offer several benefits. It would encourage motorists to maintain the prescribed speed limit. Drivers would realise that speeding would not necessarily help, as they may still have to wait at the next red signal. This could discourage rash and excessive speeding.
Secondly, frequent stopping, idling and acceleration lead to higher fuel consumption and vehicular emissions. Smoother traffic movement would help reduce both fuel consumption and pollution. Thirdly, reducing frequent braking and acceleration could lower wear and tear on vehicles and also make driving less stressful.
We appreciate the Traffic Police Department’s continued efforts to manage traffic and ensure road safety in the city. Introducing a coordinated signalling system on the Ring Road could be a progressive step towards making Mysuru a smarter and more environment-friendly heritage city.
