Health talk highlights senior citizens’ well-being

January 20, 2025

Mysuru: As part of its monthly Health Talk series, the Elder Citizens Council, Jayalakshmipuram, recently hosted an insightful session featuring renowned physicians Dr. N. Chandrasekhar from Aditya Adhikari Hospital, Gokulam, and Dr. Sainath from PKTB Sanitorium. The event focused on promoting health and longevity among senior citizens through preventive measures and healthy practices.

Dr. Chandrasekhar emphasised the significance of periodic health check-ups and timely medical consultations, reiterating the age-old adage, “prevention is better than cure.”

Dr. Sainath, drawing from over three decades of experience at the PKTB Sanitorium, highlighted advancements in tuberculosis (TB) treatment that have significantly reduced mortality rates.

He urged seniors to adopt safe practices, including using a stool or chair for bathing, avoiding bending and maintaining a balanced diet to manage blood pressure and sugar levels. Regular blood tests for sugar, hemoglobin and BP monitoring were also recommended.

He also shed light on the historical significance of the PKTB Sanitorium founded by the Maharajas of Mysore.

March 24, recognised as National TB Day, commemorates the efforts to combat the disease.

Dr. Sainath elaborated on modern TB treatments, which typically span six months, and stressed the need for nutritional support, such as consuming sprouted grains, buttermilk with salt and juices, while avoiding spicy foods and taking medications as prescribed.

He also addressed the plight of economically disadvantaged TB patients who struggle with costly medications, underscoring the importance of health insurance to cover medical expenses. He encouraged families to support patients emotionally, as neglect exacerbates their condition.
