Helmet Quality Checking Drive: Police seize non-ISI marked helmets

January 2, 2018

Mysuru: Keeping in mind the safety of motorists (two- wheeler riders) and also to prevent fatalities through head injuries, the Mysuru City Police (both Civil and Traffic) began their drive against motorists wearing non-Indian Standards Institute (ISI) mark helmets in city this morning.

Stationed at vantage points in city, the Police personnel were seen stopping two-wheeler riders and checking their helmets (both rider and pillion). The Police seized helmets worn by two-wheeler riders which did not have ISI marks as they do not comply with the safety standards. The Police personnel after seizing the helmets were seen pasting the vehicle number and the phone number of the rider on the helmets besides advising them to buy ISI mark helmets for the safety of their precious lives.

ASI Venkatesh and Constable S. Mohan Kumar of V.V. Puram Police Station, who were conducting the drive near Yadavagiri Under-Bridge, told SOM that the drive against non-ISI mark helmets was supposed to start yesterday but as it was a New Year day, they have commenced the drive from today.

He said that the non-ISI mark helmets which are seized by them would be handed over to the jurisdictional Traffic Police Stations for  futher action.

Meanwhile, DCP Dr. Vikram V. Amathe, speaking to SOM, said that the drive against non-ISI mark helmets began at 9 am today and would continue throughout the day. He said that the helmets which are seized during the drive would be destroyed and added that places where such helmets are sold on roadsides are being raided and the helmets seized there too are also being destroyed.

Sir, this special drive for helmet quality check is it only for Mysore? Its not done in Bangalore or else anywhere. And what right police have in confiscating helmets ? If it’s rule, they can only restrict for wearing such helmets with ISI mark or so, can’t confiscate. And also sudden drive has put many families to too much hardship, where there are 3 to 4 members and have to shell down huge amount at one stretch.

  2. Bore G says:

Police should seize this idea and arrest all merchants who sell non ISI markd helmets. With that they would be doing a service to the society. Wait.. that would mean they will not get their Hafta. Never mind.

  3. lathish says:

Hope police is wearing BIS approved helmets. And full face helmet.

  4. shyam sundar vattam says:

The sale of such brandless helmets has been going on for years. Suddenly, the city cops seem to have become strict on wearing such helmets. I hope this drive should not become a day or two affair but a continuous one. Sellers will make a comeback after few days.

  5. Prasad says:

maintain roads , maintain traffic signals, fine people that violates norms, strict control in issuing driving licences, avoid worst parking on roads , educate road users – these are the measures required to enhance safety

since there has been failures, it ended dumping extra weight on the heads,
    to start with rider
    then pillion rider
may go to the extent of cycle user
followed with everyone on the road
    The best policy
