Hero Indian Super League 2020-21: Mohun Bagan edge past Chennaiyin in injury-time

January 22, 2021

Mohun Bagan secured three points after a 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC at the Fatorda Stadium yesterday. David Williams scored the only goal of the game in second-half stoppage time.

Mohun Bagan had a big chance to go ahead in the 39th minute when a cross from the left found Krishna in the box, but the Fijian’s header sailed over the crossbar. Memo Moura also took a shot from range for Chennaiyin just before halftime. His effort though was deflected behind for a corner, which was defended safely as the teams went into the break with the match goalless.

Like in the first half, both teams took some time to find their rhythm in the second and ATK Mohun Bagan introduced a couple of substitutes after the hour mark to inject some fresh impetus to their attack. The Kolkata giants went on to up the ante after the substitutes and came close to taking the lead in the 74th minute when a direct freekick by Hernandez required Kaith to make a diving save.

The final 10 minutes of regulation time saw the Marina Machans be a bit more adventurous going forward while the Mariners continued to see more of the ball without doing much with it. Antonio Lopez Habas’ men eventually made all their possession count in injury time and it was one of his substitutes that got the winner.

Williams, who came off the bench in the 67th minute, rose highest and powered in a thumping header from a Hernandez corner to give his side the lead. Chennaiyin then pushed hard for an equaliser in the dying seconds of the match and even forced Tiri to make a goalline clearance to deny Enes Sipovic from scoring with his head. However, in the end, ATK Mohun Bagan’s defence managed to hold on to their lead and secure maximum points.
