High Court orders formation of Ward Committees, Area Sabhas in MCC

July 7, 2021

Mysore/Mysuru: The Karnataka High Court (HC) has ordered formation of Ward Committees and Area Sabhas in Mysuru City Corporation (MCC)  and has set a two-month deadline for the same.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Monday, Aam Admi Party (AAP) leader and city resident G.R. Vidyaranya said that he, along with other party leaders Malavika Gubbivani and C.S. Janardhan, had filed a PIL in the High Court in February this year seeking formation of Ward Committees in the MCC, after several representations to the Civic Body in this regard yielded no results.

A  HC  Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.S. Oka and Justice Suraj Govindaraj, which completed  hearing of  arguments and counter-arguments concerning the PIL on June 23, directed the MCC on Saturday last to form Ward Committees and Area Sabhas. The Court also set a two-month deadline for the same, Vidyaranya said.

Urging the MCC to honour the Court verdict and facilitate formation of Ward Committees, he called upon the citizens to actively involve themselves in Ward development.

Maintaining that the formation of Ward Committees will help in curbing corruption and maintenance of transparency, he said that there should be at least 10 members in the Committee, with adequate representation for SC/ST communities and women.

He reiterated that the Ward Committee will play a significant role in proper utilisation of funds, giving no scope for misuse. The citizens can WhatsApp to 72599-36111 for more information or clarification, he added.

AAP leader Malavika Gubbivani and others were present at the press meet.
