HSRP number plates to old vehicles on hold, mandatory for new

April 4, 2026

Bengaluru: The mandatory rule to install High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) number plates to vehicles has been relaxed in the State.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highway had issued an order making it mandatory to install HSRP number plates for all vehicles, however, following a poor response from the vehicle owners, the mandatory rule has been relaxed and put on hold.

The State Government had earlier extended the deadline several times to install HSRP number plates. According to reports, out of the 2 crore old vehicles, registered before Apr. 1, 2019, 1.41 crore vehicles were yet to fix HSRP number plates with only 59 lakh vehicles installing new HSRP number plates.

With the rule relaxed for the old vehicles, measures have been initiated to mandatorily install HSRP number plates to the new vehicles, said RTO officials.
