Illegal sand transporters sentenced to two years imprisonment

Mysuru: Principal District and Sessions Court Judge P.G.M. Patil, yesterday sentenced two persons to two years imprisonment and has imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 on them for illegal transportation of sand. The Judge has also directed the Police to register a case against one Shivakumar and Mahadeva for providing false witness.

Those who have been sentenced have been identified as Umesh of Kanahalli village in T. Narsipur taluk and Basavaraju of M.C. Halli.

It is reported that on Jan. 21, 2015, T. Narsipur Police Sub-Inspector M. Shivanna and staff had intercepted a tractor loaded with sand near Kurubur village gate and had taken tractor driver Umesh into custody.

During interrogation, the Police came to know that sand was being transported illegally as Umesh did not have relevant documents and even failed to produce the permit.

The Police, who registered a case in this regard, submitted a charge-sheet against driver Umesh and Basavaraju, the owner of the tractor, to the Court.

Judge P.G.M. Patil, who heard the arguments, found Umesh and Basavaraju guilty and sentenced them to two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000. The Judge also directed the Police to seize the tractor used for the crime. Public Prosecutor H.E. Chinnappa argued for the Government.
