Increase medical staff before 3rd wave: Advisory Panel

May 19, 2021

Bengaluru: Technical Advisory Committee has suggested the State Government to increase medical staff to effectively face third wave of COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, a committee, headed by senior IAS Officer and former Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Ajay Seth, had submitted a report during the first wave of Corona which must be re-visited by the Government.

The expert committee has  stressed the need to increase the number of doctors, nurses, paramedics and health staff to deal with the contagion effectively.

For every 100 positive patients, there should be one doctor and for every 10 patients there should be one nurse. In ICU, there must be one nurse to take care of two patients and every eight patients require one doctor. In reality, in ICU, there is one doctor to look after 10-15 patients and one nurse for 20-30 patients. But the guidelines by National Accreditation Board for the Government Hospitals were not followed as investment was being made only on ventilators, ICU and oxygen concentrators. But no attention was given towards the staff who operate these equipment.
