India needs more emphasis on cancer-related research: Dr. Vishveshwara

March 9, 2020

Mysore/Mysuru: “Cancer-related research is not happening much in India. Our researchers here are just copying and selling them. For this reason, cancer has emerged as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in India,” opined Bharath Cancer Hospital Chief Radiation Oncologist Dr. M.S. Vishveshwara.

He was speaking at a book release organised by University of Mysore (UoM) in association with Sapna Book House at Vignana Bhavan, Manasagangothri here recently.

UoM Registrar Prof. R. Shivappa released the book titled ‘Cancer – Bahuvidhada Aswasthate,’ written by UoM Zoology Department Professor Suttur S. Malini.

“Our Government is spending huge amount of money to buy arms and ammunition but is not interested in carrying out research in this field. Without financial aid from the Government, it is not possible to develop newer and more effective medicines for treating cancer.

We cannot compare diseases like malaria and typhoid to cancer. Cancer patients suffer from a number of issues,” Dr. Vishveshwara said.

UoM Registrar Prof. R. Shivappa addressed the gathering after releasing the book. Later, Prof. H.A. Ranganath, Prof. S.N. Hegde, Prof. V.A. Vijayan, Prof. Prakash R. Nayak, Prof. S.R. Ramesh, Prof. V. Vasudev, Prof. H.N. Chaturvedi and Prof. N.B. Ramachandra were felicitated at the function.

Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji graced the occasion. UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof G. Hemantha Kumar was also present.
